Mongolian throat singing

The whistling you’re hearing in the background of this video is coming from the singing man, it’s the strange and entrancing technique known as “throat singing.” The layers of sound are achieved by training oneself to use the fake set of vocal cords called the vestibular fold which covers the more delicate vocal cords that you actually do your talking with. This tough, thick vocal cord is still flexible but harder to vibrate and therefore usually emanates either a deep drone or a delicate whistle.

Cosmic Invasion 2010

CRW_9391

Today I went to Cosmic Invasion, a yearly event in Lexington, Kentucky that’s centered around music, art, and skating. Logan coordinates a lot of the stuff going on at this event, and I wanted to come along to help him out. I have absolutely no hand eye coordination and therefore will never been seen on a skateboard, but I am pretty decent at taking pictures, so I decided to take some photos instead of helping to sell skateboards that I knew nothing about. Fortunately, skate parks offer a great opportunity to practice action photography, and I think some of the pictures turned out pretty cool. Here are a few of my favorites, the rest are on MobileMe and Flickr.
